Psychology of Redemption - Bible

The New Testament Church - The Church: The Divine Ideal by George Dana Boardman, Radical Reformission and Confessions of a Reformission Rev. by Mark Driscoll. Students must read the texts and listen to 9 taped lectures by Pete Beck, Jr. which will be available online. Two papers, each being at least five typed, double-spaced pages, must be written o topics selected from a list that will be provided. Students must integrate what is learned from the texts with the taped lectures. In addition, short essay questions must be answered that will relate to the content of the lectures. Students are encouraged to contact Pete Beck, Jr. or Pete Beck III by email or phone to discuss any questions that may arise.

  • Lectures: Download and listen to the following lectures by Pete Beck, Jr. Each lecture has essay questions for the student to answer and send to him. Contact Pete Beck III for lecture and essay question location on website.
  • Papers: 5 pages in length. Choose one topic from of the list of topics on the books written by Mark Driscoll. The second paper must be written about a topic relating to Boardman's book. The paper on Driscoll must be submitted by the halfway mark and the one on Boardman by the end of the course. Both of these papers must be typed and submitted via email (pastor@lifeatliberty.org) to Pete Beck III. MS Word format is preferred. Please let him know if you plan to use any other format.
  1. After reading Radical Reformission and Confessions of a Reformission Rev., write a 5-page paper Comparing your own beliefs with Driscoll's and give reasons for your position. Assess your own church with regard to its being more of an attractional model or more missional. Tell which model you believe is best suited to help us fulfill the Great Commission. Describe your plan to help the church better fulfill the Great Commission using ideas found in these books. You may also use the following sub-points for paper ideas.
    • Do you believe the purpose of good administration is to give a church the opportunity to become adventurous in faith again? What has been your experience in this area? Describe a plan for your church that will help you better administrate or make a plan to help your church become more adventurous in faith to fulfill the vision.
    • How can you make the attractional elements of your church better? Why is the part of doing church so important?
    • Which ecclesiology do you believe best fits your church situation? Why? Can you envision a time of growth when you might need to change? Why?
    • What can your church do that can help prepare it for future growth? Will this involve structures, people or both?
  2. After reading The Church: The Divine Ideal by George Dana Boardman, write a five-page paper using the following guidelines.
    • Examine Boardman's position, stated on page 27 - "The 'church' as an organization was made for man, not man for the church." -  relative to the "divine pattern" approach that holds that the church must be built according to God's set pattern in order to have God's full blessing. Be sure to include discussions of the following problematic areas.
      • Church government
      • Church ordinances (baptism and communion)
      • Worship styles, and
      • Women in ministry and/or leadership
    • This paper should be an attempt to state the position you would take should you be given the opportunity to pastor a church, should you not be already serving God in that capacity. This is a chance to think through your position from a doctrinal and practical point of view.
    • Be sure to consider how we need to be true to both the spirit and letter of God's Word, or, to put it another way, how do grace and truth come together to help us arrive at a fitting position?
