A Word from Masterbuilders’ Founders
When Masterbuilders had its origins in Pete Beck’s living room in 1996, we envisioned a group of leaders with clear five-fold callings (Ephesians 4:11) working together based on committed relationships which were authentic and Christ-centered. Over the last two decades, this initial vision has not only been realized between the original team members, but has expanded to include many more leaders and churches. With growth and expansion it is easy to drift from the initial vision and mission, but the leadership team of Masterbuilders has labored hard to insure that the leaders we work with remain true to the original vision.
Two biblical realities continue to guide Masterbuilders to this day. One was already mentioned: that kingdom work requires kingdom relationships to sustain it. Second to that (but not of less importance), is the conviction that it takes the entire five-fold ministry to equip churches and advance God’s kingdom in the earth. We have sought and continue to remain true to that original biblical conviction, seeking to provide the practical means to both recognize and equip those with five-fold callings wherever we are allowed to labor.
Knowing the importance of five-fold ministry working together leads to a third biblical reality that defines us—our commitment to team ministry. I have never worked with more Christ honoring, humble leaders who continually put the interests of the kingdom above their own. While never losing our own unique giftings and identities, we realize that the team is greater than its individual parts. And having that conviction leads us to our goal of laboring, wherever we can, to raise up five-fold teams, especially in regions.
I have had the privilege of serving as team leader for many years and it has been one of the greatest experiences of my Christian life. It is a true team with leaders who seek to “do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit but in humility count others more significant than yourselves” (Philippians 2:3). Several of the leaders on our team have world-impacting ministries in many different countries. But they have striven to serve as complementary team members, each seeking to bring glory to God through Jesus Christ and using their unique fivefold gifting to supply others.
We sense a new excitement as we look ahead at what God has for this ministry. We believe he has called us to equip other five-fold teams in the future as we connect with more leaders. Our aim, as always, is to come alongside other five-fold leaders with whom God brings us into relationship in order to provide resources both through our website and through vital relational connections allowing for impartation of life. Churches can affiliate with us by choosing to relate to us and receive ministry from the team, or they can enter vital partnership with us by supporting the ministry financially by giving directly to team members or to our general fund.
We believe our best days are ahead of us.
To God be the glory,
When I first met with Neil Silverberg and several other brothers in my home, we talked about forming a five-fold group of ministers. I had been serving Christ for 23 years. Through my ministry, God raised up a church of approximately 600 people meeting in a large building. Those sent out from the church planted three other churches in adjacent cities. God also allowed me to have contacts with other networks and churches in the United States and overseas.
I saw much abuse and lack of understanding concerning the role of five-fold ministry, as described in Ephesians.
And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, Ephesians 4:11-13 (ESV)
I saw personal ambition place God’s people under bondage. I also witnessed hierarchical control over people’s faith. I observed people using their positions of trust to enrich themselves. This all served to create in me a yearning and a vision to see purely motivated five-fold ministry in action.
To me it was obvious that this ministry was given to the church by Christ Himself. In no way was the church given to serve and exalt the five-fold ministry, be used for financial gain, or to ensconce ministers and leaders into power structures. Rather, the five-fold ministry is called to come alongside churches and help them grow into maturity and the image of Christ. As Paul wrote in Second Corinthians, five-fold ministry works with the the local church.
Not that we have dominion over your faith, but are fellow workers for your joy; for by faith you stand. 2 Corinthians 1:24 (NKJV)
My vision is for five-fold ministry to work as a true team, because it takes apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers to mature the body of Christ. For this to happen, each member of the team will need to esteem the gifts and callings of the others, which requires humility, maturity, and a strong sense of their own ministry and calling. Masterbuilders is a fulfillment of this vision.
Over the years, I developed some honest trust relationships with several men in the larger body of Christ. I was satisfied in my mind that they were mature or budding five-fold ministers, who truly cared for Christ’s church and agenda. Over time these men came together to pursue the vision of Masterbuilders. MB is very much a work in progress, but I feel that we have made significant progress.
Another reason I helped to launch MB was to provide trusted oversight relationships to the churches for which I cared. At that date, I was sixty-six years old. Now I am 90. Regardless of how much longer I may live, I am confident that the MB team is available to come alongside these churches to help them when I go to my reward. May the Lord give us grace to work together in love as a five-fold team that advances God’s glory and kingdom in the earth through a mature church!
